Where I Live and Work
Where I Live
As a landscape painter, my inspiration comes from where I live; the rugged North York Moors and serene Howardian Hills. I was born and brought up in North Yorkshire, left for university and - after many years working abroad in the Middle East, Asia and Europe - only returned to live here 3 years ago. My best move ever! There truly is no place like home.
Here are some of the gorgeous places where I love to walk and sketch:
North York Moors: Farndale, Bransdale, Robin Hood's Bay
The Howardian Hills: Yearsley Woods, Caulkley's Bank, Ampleforth Lakes
What's special about all these places is the abundance of birds and wildlife, the peace and tranquility, and the (very Romantic, I know) sense of being in touch with something beyond ourselves. I've never been a very religious person, but out in the woods, moors and coast I feel a real sense of the connectedness of all things.
Where I Work
I share a studio and gallery with ceramicist Pamela Thorby at Nunnington Pottery & Arts, Nunnington Studios, Low Street, Nunnington YO62 5UR. It's a tranquil setting in a stunning courtyard and makes a lovely morning or afternoon out, ending with a cream tea in the Old Yard Coffee Shop, or a stroll along the river.
