Inspired by the Hold of Horcum

Some landscapes seem to hold us within them.

Inspired by the dramatic forms of the Hole of Horcum on the North York Moors, Encircled explores the sweeping contours, shifting light and timeless geology of this remarkable place. Layers of warm ochres, deep umbers and soft violets flow across the paper, suggesting the curves of the land without describing them in detail.

The painting is an interpretation rather than a literal view, distilling the landscape into colour, shape and atmosphere. Broad washes and expressive marks evoke the feeling of standing within this vast natural amphitheatre, where weather, light and land are in constant conversation.
