Course Description

Friday Painting Studio A relaxed monthly painting session with demonstration, individual guidance and optional lunch afterwards. Who is it for? Ideal for anyone with some previous painting experience who would like regular time to paint, experiment and develop their own work with inspiration, support and guidance. You don't need to be an experienced painter, but these sessions aren't designed for complete beginners. If you're new to watercolour, one of my introductory workshops would be a better place to start. Each month we'll begin with a short demonstration exploring a particular technique or approach. You'll then have plenty of time to work on your own painting, putting the ideas into practice if you wish, or continuing with something you're already working on. I'll be on hand throughout the morning for individual guidance, feedback and help with anything you're finding tricky. We'll finish with an informal look at the morning's work before heading out for an optional lunch at Dough or Castle Howard. Materials Please bring your own watercolour paper and, if you wish, any favourite materials you'd particularly like to work with. Watercolours, brushes, inks and other basic materials will be available in the studio. 2026 Friday 16 October – Working with a Limited Palette Explore how a smaller palette can create more harmonious and atmospheric paintings. Friday 13 November – Ink & Watercolour Experiment with expressive line, loose washes and different ways of combining ink and watercolour. Friday 11 December – Light & Atmosphere Explore tone, edges and contrast to create a stronger sense of light and atmosphere in your paintings. 2027 Friday 5 February – Composition: Finding the Painting Explore ways to simplify a subject, find a strong composition and decide what to leave out. Friday 12 March – Expressive Watercolour Experiment with looser washes, gestural marks and ways of letting the paint do more of the work. Friday 9 April – From Sketch to Painting Explore how sketches and visual notes can become the starting point for a more personal finished painting. Details 10am–1pm £50 per session Book whichever sessions appeal to you – there's no need to attend them all. Optional lunch afterwards at Dogh or Castle Howard is paid for separately.
